Summer Music 2020: Concert 3

The Prairie Winds Present American Music for Wind Quintet

Summer 2020 with Madeline Island Chamber Music Continues

Our doors are closed, but Madeline Island Chamber Music is open and the music continues! We’re pleased to bring you this series of highlights from the Madeline Island Chamber Music concert archives.

The Prairie Winds deliver the fresh sounds of the woodwind quintet to Madeline Island every summer, performed by this ensemble whose personalities sparkle as much as the delightful wind quintet repertoire they perform.

In this digital premiere performance, you’ll hear selections from the Prairie Winds’ 2019 concert: American Folk Suite by Polish-American composer Kazimierz Machala that combines several familiar American folk tunes; and Ashokan Farewell by American folk musician Jay Ungar. A sentimental Scottish lament in a waltz form, Ashokan Farewell was featured in the Ken Burns film series The Civil War. This arrangement was created by Prairie Winds clarinetist Susan Warner.

The music evokes old-fashioned summertime, a simpler time before “coronavirus” became a household word. Listen carefully for the tree frogs peeping in the background between pieces.

Please enjoy this 8-minute celebration of American wind music brought to you by the Prairie Winds.
